Is PIP backdated? was created by Morksmate
I have just received my letter awarding me PIP for the first time today. My form was completed and returned by 10 March 2017 and I had my face to face assessment on 24 May2017.
I had been told by a friend that, should I be approved, my award would be backdated to when I first applied i.e. 10 March, however, it has been backdated to 24 May i.e. my assessment date.
I had doubted my friend's advice in the first place, so wasn't completely surprised, but he is adamant that his was backdated to the date he originally applied.
Can anyone help please?

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

I assume this was a new claim for PIP and not a transfer from a DLA award.
Assuming this to be the case then your award should be backdated to the date that you started the claim, however, PIP requires that you must have suffered from your current limitations for at least three months, so I am wondering if you have fallen foul of this rule.
I'm afraid the only way to know, if it has not been explained on the Decision Letter, is for you to contact the DWP that dealt with your claim.

Thank you Gordon. It was a new claim but my medical situation has been the same for over 10 years. I will give them a call as soon as I am able.
Your help is much appreciated.
