Going abroad on ESA for medical treatment was created by ramtally
Hi everyone,
I have a few questions pertaining to going abroad when on income related ESA.
I've had a look on the DWP website and can't see any advice on how to proceed with going abroad for medical treatment when on income based ESA. I have also called through to the DWP but the staff have been most unhelpful. I was wondering if anyone knows what the procedure is and how long I am entitled to go away for? I know that for contribution based ESA, 26 weeks is permitted provided that an individual can prove that they have gone for medical treatment.
Lastly, the DWP website says that for ESA, you are allowed 28 days abroad. Is this 28 days every tax year (April - April) or every calendar year (January - December) ?

It's 26 weeks for Income Related ESA as well, but the DWP must agree that you are receiving suitable treatment, another member travelled on this basis without confirming that the treatment was acceptable to the DWP and they lost their ESA and had an overpayment.
Providing you return to the UK in between and fulfil any other obligations that you have from your ESA then you can leave the country as many time as you want, but for no more than four weeks.
