Education/ESA and Universal Credit was created by janice
My learning disabled son is 20 at beginning sept. He is still on DLA (high rate for care and mobility). I am on income support and at the moment he is still my dependant, I know in sept this will stop being the case (although he is totally dependant) My question is how and when does he claim in his own right? In September he is staying in full time education (2.5 days) funded by our local education authority. I've had no letters regarding him, just one letter about my benefits saying mine will change in September. I will lose everything I claim for him which I know I just don't know how or when or even what I need to do for my son to claim. Any advice much appreciated. Thank you

It's really up to him/you.
You can make a claim for ESA in advance of your Child Benefit ending to start the day after it actually stops, or you can make a claim now, if he is receiving DLA HRC then he should qualify automatically for at least the WRAG rate.
Maybe put your details through one of the online benefit calculators to see which offers the most money.

Be aware, unless you are his appointee, his ESA will be paid to him so you need to think about how the two of you will manage this.

Thank you. how do I become his appointee. He is totally dependant and isn't able to manage anything himself.
