Claiming Benefits was created by Julie
Hi
I am new to this and never posted anything to a Forum before. Please could you advise. My husband desperately needs to have a hip replacement operation. But he is self employed and needs to work as we have a mortgage. I work part time, 25 hours. I am also a carer for my daughter who has mental health problems. We have been told because I work we cannot claim anything, which is awful. My husband and I have never claimed any benefits and now when we desperately need help. We are told we cannot claim. But if we was to split up and I leave (we have been married 22years) he can claim.
Please if anyone can help us, that would be a great help. Thank you.

Your working 25 hours a week prevents you claiming any mean tested benefits, if you reduced your hours to less than 24 hours a week then you might be able to make a claim but I think your income would still prevent payment.

Has your husband been purchasing Class 2 Ni Contributions from his self-employment, if he has and he has 50 weeks of NICs in both the Tax Years 2014-15 and 2015-16 then he may be eligible for Contribution Based ESA which is not affected by your earnings or hours worked.

You can try putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators, they may recommend options that we don't advise on.
