When I need to go to hospital I just book an ambulance. My GP set it up at the start so its been ongoing for the last six years.

Hi there, thanks, yes I know about those type of bus/ambulances but in events of emergencies etc like I was in those are no good, an ordinary 999 ambulance with paramedics yes, but not the sort I think your meaning, I could have easily called 999 for an ambulance and cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds or whatever it is but because the doctor (secialist eye doctor on call) told me the second time he would be leaving from his house and to meet him at the hospital when he arrived like 1 or 2 hours later then I though well, I could still phone a 999 ambulance but what was the point when I would have had to have waited on the doctor to arrive anyway, so I jumpped the taxi from the house instead and saved the tax payer thousands of pounds and now its down to me to try and claim back all my expenses, I don't know but I'm sure because I still couldn't see proper the following day too and my optician told me to come to him quickly, I had a neighbour run me there, wait and then run me back, I promised him the price of at least a gallon of petrol or £5 - £10 for inconvienence but so far I have no money to give him anything and without receipts as he obviously wasnt a taxi I doubt I would have any chance of getting any money back for him, but I dont know :(

Hi melanie, I used to get a taxi in my area & everything was fine for a while depending on which hospital I went to. We needed a receipt from taxi driver, a copy of our hospital letter, & proof of benefits letter. I stopped claiming eventually as they used to look at me like I was scum of the earth, & as soon as I mentioned travel expenses their sour faces would set in. It was almost like it was their own money they were forking out. We've got the ambulance too, but don't bother any more. If someone gives you a lift I think you fill in s form & they pay so much per mile, but it ain't a lot. All the best whatever you do, but don't be put off.
