Taxable income estimate was created by trainingisgood
I am on ESA Support Group (income related). I have just checked my tax code which is 1150L and it is showing a taxable income estimate of £5857 for April 2017 to 5 April 2018. I am confused as I thought Employment and Support Allowance (income related) was a tax free state benefit. Please can you help.
Kind regards

You are correct, ESA(IR) is not liable to tax.
The obvious question is are you sure that you are on Income Related ESA?
Although the amount is close, it is still a couple of £100 higher than you would receive if your ESA was Contribution Based so do you have any income?
Were you transferred from another benefit to ESA?

Thank you Gordon. I have always been classed as income related on documentation from dwp. However my husband was also included on the claim because of low income. I was receiving approx £485 every two weeks. This has now halved as my husband who is now 65 receives his state pension. Not too concerned just so difficult to understand all of this. Thanks again.

It is possible to be receiving ESA(CB) with an ESA(IR) top-up, but as I said the amounts don't tally.
