Hi, I am my son's appointee and we are going through the DLA to PIPs changeover. We have a f2f at home in two weeks and I was hoping you could advise what input will be expected from him. If I am his appointee can I help him with his answers especially if I think he has misunderstood? Also if I feel he has not answered fully or correctly can I prompt him or correct him? Its a very difficult appointment to see him going through at 16 years old when he already feels embarrassed about the help he needs. Talking to a stranger about the things he can't do is not going do anything to boost his confidence. Your site has been so much help so far, thank you.

Make it clear to the assessor that you are your son's DWP recognised appointee as soon you enter the interview. I assume your son lacks insight or understanding of his problems, I would mention this as well.

They may still direct their questions at your son, but should accept your input and corrections.

Thank you Gordon, that is very reassuring. Yes he has trouble with understanding and communicating and doesn't find it easy to accept the problems he has so will be reluctant to open up about them. It is good to know that I can emphasis at the beginning that i will be helping him and guiding him along.

You shouldn't need it but the relevant reference is on page 58 of the PIP Assessment Guide, Part One - The Assessment Process.

There's a copy in the PIP section.

I can hardly believe I am posting this but we have received the brown envelope and my son has been awarded Enhanced Daily Living and Enhanced Mobility!! This is despite what I felt was a horrendous F2F. I got so concerned with how he was coping that I didn't feel that I contributed as much as I should as his appointee and forgot quite a few important points. As a result I have spent the last few weeks torturing myself, feeling as though I let him down and preparing for a MR and appeal. The relief is immense and he has been awarded it until 2023 which means he will not have to go through this again for some time. The descriptors given versus those not are in some ways a surprise but I will request the report for our records for the future.

I am so appreciative of this site and am so glad I came upon it. It was the best £20 I have ever spent and I encourage everyone to join up prior to filling in the dreaded form. The info in the members guides is superb and I credit it for giving this positive outcome. I have to thank Gordon especially who answered a number of my queries in the forum - he is a fountain of knowledge and dedicates so much time to the forum - I hope he knows how much he is appreciated.

Thank you again and good luck to everyone still going through this horrendous process.
