When does caring become classed a living together? was created by shirleymason.fig@gmail.com
My husband became ill with metal issue in early 2016. Before we realised he was unwell we split up and he moved out of the house we used to share and started to rent another property we own (we have several, we are professional landlord).
We find the arrangement suits us and although we have reconciled we have decided to keep separate addresses. We are still involved financially as we have joint bank accounts for the properties and personaL accounts.
My husband made several serious suicide attempts at the end of last year and has since been diagnosed with severe schizophrenia. He is still receiving medical support and has been awarded PIP and ESA. I still see a lot of him as we are close again and he needs support. He stays with me overnight on an adhoc basis sometimes for support others because we are 'courting' but he does not live with me.
I would like to claim carers allowance including overnight care for the times my husband is unsettled I am concerned about us being classed as living together as man and wife as we both claim single persons discount for our homes.
Does anyone have any thoughts please?

You can claim Carers Allowance if you provide at least 35 hours of care a week and do not earn more than £116 per week after deductions.

I recommend that you get face to face advice before you make any decisions about your claiming CA. I think that there are a number of potential issues due to your shared ownership of property and the fact that you still have joint bank accounts. Even if you are not classed as a couple there is a real risk that your finances may have an impact on the benefits that you receive.
