My disability and caring for cancer sufferer

Im in the process of applying for PIP after years on DLA with chronic asthma, diabetes, eye problems and depression which isnt clinical.
A year ago my wife was diagnosed with stage 4 secondary breast cancer (after 13 years since primary) and for this past year I have had to cope with caring...she was/is my carer under DLA for various aspects of life, not just in mental health but normal household duties as well as the stress of hospital visits. We have no immediate family nearby. after moving 2 years ago to semi rural setting and found out there was no buses anymore and we have mobility car...fortunately my wife is now on PIP so we can apply for a car on hers if we lose my mobility.
Obviously the PIP questions are about how disability affects me and looking after myself, but it is an added burden caring for my wife but i have no option , so do i mention this added burden on both physical and mental state, without it sounding as if its a sob story?
Thanks .

You won't score points for your caring activities and there is a risk that they may actually detract from the problems that you are having with the PIP activities. You can't not mention what you do, especially if you receive Carers Allowance, but you will need to consider explaining how you manage the care for your wife whilst still having problems yourself.

As a deliberately silly example, if you say that you have problems preparing a meal but cook for your wife then this would be an issue.

Hi Cavair
If you live in a semi rural area it is still worth looking to see if you have a Carers Centre and also CAB office - Citizens Advice or Welfare Advisor in your area, Welfare Benefit Advisors are sometimes based through local council offices, both can help and advice on benefits and completing forms. CAB Advisors also sometimes can be found working from GP`S - which is known as the GP CAB Outreach Scheme. It is also worth mentioning to your doctors also now of any other local support with form filling etc., please do not try to manage alone with all of this and I am Sorry to hear about your wife`s cancer, but I was also wondering If you have any cancer support nurses or helpline, they maybe able to also offer help and advice.

Very best wishes to you and your wife for 2018.

Meg
