PIP recording home visits was created by Jo
Hi,

I wanted to ask a question about recording home visits.

My mother has a PIP home visit coming up and we strongly feel that we need to record the assessment. I’ve heard conflicting information about recording a sessions and I just wanted to get clarification. I understand that I need to use the correct type of recording device, and that I need to notify the DWP/ATOS about this, but I have also been advised that I need their permission. Is this true? Can they refuse the opportunity to allow for a recording and withdraw her benefit?

I would be really grateful for any advice you may have. It’s been very difficult to find a complete answer.

Claimants have no legal right to require their assessment is recorded it is at the discretion of the Assessment Provider and the individual assessor, so yes, you need prior permission to make the recording. I would not expect this to be refused.

Sorry, I should probably clarify that this is for a PIP review. I just had another question: I need to postpone the appointment, This is the first postponement but I was wondering if they can/ have ever refused this?

You can move the appointment once, I would ring them, that way you can hopefully ensure that the new appointment is acceptable. I've not seen a request refused. You must attend the re-arranged appointment or risk your claim being closed.

Requesting the assessment is recorded may result in the appointment being moved anyway, this should not be counted against you, although it is likely that will not consult you about when to re-arrange it for.

Hi,

I just wanted to ask a follow-up question about recording equipment for the home visit. I understand that I will need to provide two cassette tapes and I'm having trouble finding a dual cassette machine. Can I use two single cassette recorders simultaneously instead?

I've also heard some people say that the DWP only accept recording devices from NEAL. These are all but impossible to find even on Ebay, but actually, I haven't found any confirmation of this in any of the DWP's documents. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is indeed the case?

Many Thanks for your help.

You can use two cassette recorders, the brand is not important. Make sure that use new tapes and break the seals on them in the presence of the assessors.

Some members have used additional microphones to make the sound recorded better.
