Hi,
This is a post from a new member, so please bear with me;
From onset of walking I experience pain and discomfort. I reliably walk less than 50 mtr (high rate mobility in my current DLA award). Have 1 aid (walking stick)
Lots of evidence from GP's and neuro/ortho surgeons/consultants+other professionals. 2 spinal procedures 2013/14 and 2 hip-replacements 2011/12.
Spinal stenosis and bi-lateral decompession and laminectomy partially successful. Suffer from neurological deficit and neurogenic pain and discomfort with large amount of ineffective medication; gabapentin and tramadol + others.
Surgeon acknowledges this partial success in a letter supported also by GP confirmation. He indicates 'that right-leg has not responded to surgery and that the symptoms that resulted in the 2 spinal surgeries 13/14 are still evident'
Reliably can say that I need supervision when cooking due to balance problems. Require help with remembering medication (anxiety-take diazapam). Require help and assistance with exercise routine for chronic hyperventilation syndrome. Need supervision to toilet through the night due to efficacy of high levels of medication. Use toilet adaption through the day.
Need supervision when crossing roads, due to poor balance and lack of awareness due to high level of medication.
Have ESA 85 form from DWP nurse when transiting to support group of ESA, used this to get current DLA award.
Age 67 regular weight despite poor mobility.
Anyone got any hints and/or suggestion given the background that I have presented.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

I would start by your reviewing our PIP Claim information on the following link

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1

Some quick thoughts on your post;

You make no mention of the use of aids and appliances, those assessing you will so you need to indicate where you need an aid to compete an activity but just as importantly when one will not help you. As an example you mention balance problems in the kitchen, the DWP will say you can overcome this with the use of a perching stool.

Be aware, you are not required to complete any of the PIP activities without pain, however, if your ability to complete the activity is limited by pain then this should be considered. I notice you use the word "discomfort", this is unlikely to be seen as sufficient.

You need to explain why you have problems completing the activities, don't assume that those assessing you will make the leap from your conditions to the problems that you have, you need to spell it out for them and to do so every time you need to.

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Thanks Gordon,
Aids that are NHS granted (supported by evidence).
Walking stick/s, toilet adaptation and wheelchair (Not in use just now)
Will find a way to say 'discomfort' in a more robust fashion. eg ' aching in my legs causing considerable distress'

Hi Gordon,
Just been diagnosed with Arachnoiditis a disease that affects the nerves connecting to the lower back and legs.
There is no cure for the above which causes inflamation of the membranes that surround the spinal cord.
Consultant says this is the result of an earlier spinal surgery where the DURA was torn.
Have lots of prior info on how this limits my day-to day ability to do numerous tasks around the house and out and about as well. Also causes distress through pain and aching in legs at onset of walking.
Gordon have you heard of this disease and what are your views on using this as the main thrust of my argument in my PIP claim.
Regards,
Bob

Forgive me but it is not really the condition that matters but the limitations that result from it, specifically in relation to each of the PIP activities.

Two people could have the same conditions and one, could receive the highest award and the other none, because their limitations are different.
