PIP appeal was created by KPPurple
Hi,
I have my pip appeal scheduled for early Feb and I’m very nervous about it. I’ve a few questions about it.
1. I’ve a representative, but they haven’t confirmed if they’ll be able to attend the tribunal yet. If not, who else could I ask to join me? Can a parent come with me? I do worry if they come along they’ll answer for me. Or can I postpone until I find another representative?
2. What questions am I likely to be asked?
3. How should I dress for the tribunal?

I am visually impaired and dyslexic. Their whole basis of their decision is that because I use a kindle, liquid level indicator and can use public transport that they couldn’t award me PIP. I scored 6 on the daily living and 0 in planning a journey. They argued that because I use public transport that I’ve no issues, even though I only use public transport on familiar routes. I mentioned thst I use special assistance for helpi finding the bus and ticket kiosk or if there’s a disruption to the journey, I.e. road works or bus breaks down, I’d be unable to continue on the journey as I’d have difficulty navigating this and I’d get a taxi. This mad made no difference to their decision, How do I put my case across effectively?

1. If your Representative cannot attend then you can take someone else with you to the hearing, for example one of your parents, they can either attend as a companion or as a witness but don't call them your Representative as they won't be able to fulfil the functions that the panel will then expect of them.

2, I'm afraid it's impossible to say what questions will be aske but the panel will be looking to understand the problems you have with reliably completing each of the PIP activities on the majority of days.

3. If you have problems with Dressing and Undressing then clothe yourself as you normally would, if you don't then I would recommend smart casual.

You don't mention your problems with the Daily Living activities so I can't comment on what you need to think of for this part of your appeal, but for the Mobility section, if you have problems with following a route, then you need to able to explain the problems that you doing this, why you have those problems, how they manifest and the impact that they have on you

So from your post and as an example, think about the problems you have with a bus journey, can your read the timetables at all and if not how do you manage to sort out which bus to take, once on the bus how do you know when to get off?

1, what is the role of the companion / witness? And are they allowed to speak on my behal?
2, for the bus I use the app on my phone which is enlarged and most buses in Northern Ireland have audio annocements. I usually take buses only on familiar routes and would have someone drive me on unfamiliar routes eg hospital appointments. In the f2f assessment I mentioned that I use special assistance to help find the bus and ticket kiosk, this didn't seem to make a difference to the result,
3. Daily living:. Making a meal, reading signs and understanding some conversations in a work environment and understanding directions and understanding,

Is dyslexia counted as a disability for Pip? I submitted an educational psychology report and it was largely ignored.

1. A companion i s there to hold your hand and a witness to give evidence to the panel.

2. So have you explained the problems you would have if these aids were not available, don't assume that those who assessed you will understand the problems that you have, always spell them out.

3. All I can suggest is that you go back to the PIP Claim guide and make sure that you have shown that you meet the criteria to score the points you think you should have, remember you need to be able to complete the activities "reliably" and "on the majority of days".

I suspect that Dyslexia is overlooked by assessors and Decision Makers, you need to explain in detail how it effects you on a day to day basis and in particular with the PIP activities. Be aware, that the more detailed your appeal submission the more likely you are to be asked about how you managed to produce it

I have a written submission being provided by the RNIB and have looked at pip tribunal videos from my local advice service. I am very nervous about it, it seems that look at the original questionnaire and asks questions that ask if you can do x but not y, why not? It's almost to try and trip you up.
My gp records have yet to be released, the appeals clerk, said i could collect them on the morning of the tribunal and arrive 15 min earlier to give them to the clerk?
My mobility isn't at all mentioned in the medical report, yes I walk OK and have no issues walking distancea. But, because I have a visual impairment, if its sunny or icy this creates difficulty for me and I trip and fall on a regular basis. I also, don't go out at night by myself to either a familiar or unfamiliar place and use a taxi.

They will ask why you have problems completing the PIP activities if they need to, whilst their questioning will be robust and they may come at an activity from different directions they are not trying to trop you up, just make sure that you meet the criteria for an award.

Good luck
