Completing PIP AR1 Form? was created by rayisfun@hotmail.com
I decided to start my own thread about the PIP AR1 review form. I have a few questions I hope can be answered to some extent.

1. According to feedback from certain people who have filled in this form, when they were invited in for an assessment, the assessor had not seen the original PIP information. On that basis, is it wise to answer all the questions in the review form even if nothing has changed? Just in case the original PIP information is missing or has not been used to reach a review decision.

2. How does the new ruling about mental health and travel affect how we answer the related questions in the review form? Should we re-emphasise the problems we have in relation to these descriptors now that the government has acquiesced?

3. My original PIP assessment was over two years ago. In that time I have more up to date medical evidence even though my condition has not improved. How can the DWP reach a decision about my condition now unless they have this information? Simply ticking "no change" without including any up to date evidence seems wrong.

4. I received the standard rate of PIP for care only. I believe I was not originally assessed fairly. This was compounded, at the time, by the government's unlawful decision to discriminate against people with mental illness. I decided not to appeal because I was too ill to continue the process, especially after I was advised of the risk that this would entail. Since then I have been put in the support group for ESA. Perhaps this was because the newer medical evidence is much clearer and the way I explain my illness has improved. My illness fluctuates and hasn't improved or got continuously worse. How do I convey this on the review form?

I hope I've explained my questions clearly. Any advice appreciated.

I'm not sure that I can easily answer your questions, there seems to be little consistency on how this form is processed by those assessing claimants.

1. We have seen members be successful by simply ticking "no change" and not others not be. Adding more content makes it more likely that you will be invited to a face to face interview.

2. I'm not sure whether it does or not, you need to explain your problems whatever happens with the changes in the law, as of a few minutes ago the DWP have still not made any changes to the DWP guidance for the Going Out activity.

3. I agree, more up to date evidence may help your claim, but see my comments for (1).

4. OK, if you did not receive the award that you expected then, for those activities that you expected to score higher for, you will have to provide a detailed response to have any hope of scoring the relevant points.

Thanks Gordon for your advice. I forgot to mention that the reason I felt unfairly assessed was because, while on DLA, I received the higher component for care and the lower one for mobility. I know the PIP assessment is different but even so, the decision seemed unfair. I'll include up to date medical info with the AR1 and reiterate the evidence where I think I was unfairly scored.

I would not advise anybody to appeal because they had HRC under DLA and did not receive an Enhanced award for PIP, the criteria for the two are fundamentally different and an HRC award in no implies a PIP award,

If you believe that you can reasonably show that you should score 12 or more points for the DL activities then that is another matter!

Thanks Gordon! I think the B&W guides and the advice in this forum has made a big difference to how I explain the effects of my illness. Initially I didn't understand how important it is to explain the variability of my illness and how this has a serious impact on me. In the face of the terrible fear that these assessments provoke, I struggle to think clearly and feel like giving up before I've even begun. Without the help and advice of my GP, friends, B&W and the CAB I doubt I would have got through it.

Despite this terrible system, I believe this learning process has helped me make a much better case for why I need help. Looking back now at my original PIP claim form I'm saddened at how much I left out and how poorly I answered some of the questions. I imagine that there are sick and disabled people all over the country who have failed to get the support they need because they aren't articulate enough or have had little or no support putting forward their case in a way that the DWP acknowledges. It truly sickens me that sick and disabled people are forced to become the best and often only advocates of their needs because of this lack of support due to cuts in welfare and services.
