ESA or Universal Credit was created by ANK
Hi,

I wanted to ask a question regarding my mother who has developed arthirits and also been diagnosed with fibro myalgia. She is also suffering with other health conditions like joint swelling and pain, spinal pain, hypothyroidism, depression, borderline diabetes, anxiety, breathing problems and asthma.I have recently applied for PIP for her as she struggles everyday with tasks like washing, dressing etc. I do everything for her and I help her on a daily basis because she is in a lot of pain. I have also been advised by the crisis team in hospital to apply for carer's allowance too.

However they have also adviced me to apply for universal credit and not ESA, and when I asked what about ESA, they weren't too sure.

I wanted to ask what would be the best course of action for my mother, I'm a bit confused to which one she is applying for. Her work managers had a meeting at home with her and said they cannot pay her anymore and she is even more stressed now on paying bills which I am currently handling too and it is so difficult keeping up with everything being a third year uni student too. Please could you advise me on whether to apply for ESA or Universal Credit?

Thank you

It's not really a choice. :)

If your mother would qualify for Contribution Bases ESA because she worked during the last two complete Tax Years, then she should be able to claim either ESA(CB) or New Style ESA.

If she is not eligible for ESA(CB), only Income Related ESA then;

If she lives in an area where Universal Credit is not active or if it is then it is not a Full Service area, then she can clam ESA.

If it is a Full Service area then she can only claim Universal Credit.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems
