DLA home care component classed as income was created by Bill Smith
With April coming round I suspect a lot of people will be receiving a letter from the local authority telling them how much they will have to contribute towards their care cost. This year they have chosen to count income awarded in the care component of DLA and PIP as part of your total income. This is grossly unfair as this award is made irrespective of the need for care.
My only income is HSA, DLA, and a small pension £35.00 a week.
Am I just being a winger or do you think this is just as unjust as I do

My real gripe is that yet again the more help you need the less you get.
Reclassifying the care component of DLA is basically a TAX on those who need the most help

Bill

I'm afraid this is not new, DLA has/can be treated as income for care support for some time.

Hi Bill, last yr around jan i think, i applied for independant living fund for my daughteer who is my main carer. my social worker encouraged us to put in for it as she was caring for me and cutting hrs from her main job as it was getting to much for her. i was assessed and allocated i think 12 hrs a week and had to pay, £90 something towards it a week. Dla wasnt classed as income but, pip is. Im not sure when this rule came in but, i had to cancel mine after a couple of months, i just couldnt afford it. My daughter is still my main carer i have other another daughter who has bipolar, she helps out when she can. I dont mind paying towards my care and do feel that, my care allowance should help towards this but, for what help i got towards it, it really wasnt worth claiming for the independance living fund. It was better to do it private and not go through them. The only benifit going through independant living was,if your carer gest sick or goes on holiday, the independant living fund covers this. My daughter wont take money from me for caring for me so, i help with fuel cost to run her car.
