Universal Credit - appointee? was created by EC
Hi, I’m new , so please forgive me if I’m asking questions in wrong place. I am having such a stressful time. My son has a diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder and was placed in ESA support group after being detained under MHA. I was assessed by ESA and had a home visit in order to be power of attorney and was made my sons appointee, which I have in writing. However due to being offered a opportunity to live independently he has now been informed to claim UC in order to receive HB. After 6 weeks of being told incorrect information, we have been informed to claim UC , which we did. I arranged an appointment to hand in ID at local job centre and was informed that my son would not need to attend and I could attend as my sons appointee. Attended job centre today and was informed that I would need to have yet another home visit in order to verify my identity?? Due to all this stress, my son has become so anxious, where I have had to request extra PRN medication, he is having nightmares and I’m so concerned he will end up back in hospital. Does anyone know if I have to be assessed again ? Would really appreciate any guidance.

I've moved your post to it's own topic as you had posted in one that is over four months old!

I'm afraid it is very likely, under what I will call legacy benefits; ESA, JSA, etc. there was something called implied consent, this meant that someone could act on behalf of a claimant if necessary, being an appointee is an extreme version of this.

Under UC this does not exist, so you are having to start the process again, it shouldn't be necessary but things like this have simply not been considered when they created the benefit.

Thank you so much for your reply. The whole DWP regarding UC is so distressing and It feels the staff DWP employ to deal with the transition over to UC from ESA support group are incompetent. I’m currently in process of issuing formal complaint to my local council as it was staff from HB that informed me my son was entitled to HB due to the fact he was in receipt of PIP and ESA support group. He’s now in £2,000 rent arrears. Sorry I’m going off track but the whole DWP system is soul destroying. Thanks once again EC

The system has not been tested properly, doing testing using single people with no health problems or children and only requiring Housing Benefit is hardly preparation for couples with children, the ill and disabled, Tax Credit claimants, etc.
