PIP Home assessment was created by Nysnanna
My husband had a home assessment on Wednesday for his transfer from DLA to PIP. He was on high rate mobility and middle rate care with an indefinite award.
We recorded the assessment after letting them know first. My husband has severe emphysema and this affects his ability to walk more than a few metres (5-10) and also his ability to carry out the majority of everyday tasks i.e. preparing a meal, bathing independently etc. At the end of the questions she said that she was not going to ask him to do any of the exercises other than the grip and pinch test because she could see he was breathless. I asked if this would go against him and he said he was quite prepared to have a go at walking across the room - she said that part of the assessment was observation and she had observed him throughout and didn't need him to do any exercises. Is this usual? We are worried that she wouldn't know how difficult he finds walking etc because she didn't see him do anything - he was sat in the chair throughout the assessment. Does it sound as though we should be concerned about this? Thanks in advance

I hope you will forgive me but I long ago gave up trying to predict the Decision based on how the assessment went, we have seen the worst one result in the highest award and the best lead to no award at all.

You should be able to request a copy of the assessment report by contacting the DWP office dealing with his claim, this will give you a good idea of how it actually went.

Hi Nysnana.
Just to let you know, if it will put the claimant at undue risk, they are not allowed to do physical tests. Obviously, Severe Emphysema would be easily seen while your husband was sitting,as he would have already shown difficulty with his breathing.
I wouldn't worry about it,as she was doing the correct thing.
It happened wih my cousin and he got Enhanced Mobility, without even rising from his chair.
Hoping for the same outcome for your husband..........Good luck!

Hi Nysnana
I have severe COPD so can relate to your OH trouble. I had a home assessment and the HCP could see my difficulties and only asked me to do the pinch and grip test also.
Received the correct award with no problem,I hope your husband has the same outcome

I just had my face to face at home and I would love to hear your result as more or less the same happened to me. I asked my assessor the same as she said she would put down that I declined to do the movement. I said that sounded negative and wouldn't The Decision Maker think I was being deliberately awkward. She said oh no, she could see I was unable to do the movement tests and if I had said no and she thought I could, she would put down that I refused to do the tests. The thing is about ten minutes later she asked if I could use public transport so I'm dead worried about it now. Perhaps I'm panicking unnecessarily and I've got the order she asked the questions in wrong. Anyway, I hope your decision goes well. Please let me know how you get on. Good luck and God Bless.
