Why is a medical required when clear evidence sent

I’ve been on Incapacity and now ESA support group to which I appeared to be transferred automatically. I’ve recently completed the ESA50 form and despite a lot of medical evidence from the last year written by about 6 different specialists I have been called for a medical.

On the form I requested a home visit because I do not use Public transport and have not one to take me. The only outings I make are to my GP and the hospital for which I have NHS Patient Transport. I do not go out at all otherwise. I was asked to supply a letter from my GP requesting I had an home visit which she did but now Maximums are saying because I get to my GP ,one mile away which I do by taxi I can visit their assessment centre 20 miles away. I’ve told them I would need a taxi and am awaiting them getting back to me re that situation.

I am however very puzzled as to why a medical is required in view of all the evidence sent. In addition to that the GP made a statement on the letter she sent requesting a home visit saying that she felt in view of the impact of my conditions that a return to work would be detrimental effect on my mental and physical health. In view of the fact that my conditions are not curable and I read in the advise sheets that often medicals are not required then I am puzzled why I am being called for one. I guess I am wondering why the doctor’s thoughts are not put to the decision maker without the need for insisting I attend the medical. I’m told it will be a chance to explain how my condition affects me but I have already done that on the form and again from the advice sheets the medical assessment is a tick box exercise and I doubt from past traumatic experiences that a true reflection will be recorded. To me there is overwhelming evidence a medical is not necessary.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

Does any of your medical evidence directly address your problems completing the ESA activities? If not then this is likely to be the reason why an assessment is required. The WCA is a functional assessment of your problems not a medical one and it is common for medical reports and letters not to actually address the criteria.

Gordon. Thanks for your reply. I understand a little better now. The medical evidence does not address the DWP criteria as they are talking about my numerous health problems although all the conditions are very relative to the factors. I have got confused because as you say the WCA is a functional test but it's referred to as a medical throughout the guides. I guess with my GP requesting that if I was forced to return to work it would be detrimental to my physical and mental health then it seems odd to have an 'Assessment' when the evidence provided looks sufficient to make a decision. By forcing someone to attend when they don't normally go out is not at all helpful. Does that statement by the GP carry any weight in the final decision?

Your GP's may be of help but only if it more specific than you have posted, as is it will be of limited value as it does not offer any explanation of why this is the case.

ESA has very specific criteria that the claimant needs to meet for an award. Do you know how you qualified for the Support Group when you were last assessed?

The GPs letter which was purely intended as a request for a Home Visit just listed my current medical conditions which included CFS and mobility issues and then went on to say that the the conditions had a significant impact on me my quality of life and mental heath and as a result a return to work would have a detrimental impact on my mental and physical health.
When I originally went on Incapacity I was assessed under appeal as having 21 points for sitting, standing, walking. That was 15 years ago. I am a lot less mobile now - have had to give up driving - do not go out socially or for shopping etc. I do not use Public transport. Since then the completed forms and evidence have been sufficient for benefit to continue and I have not seen any updated score. I did your own test and came out with with 30 points and it placed me in the support group.
