PIP Assessment was created by Mel
Hi
I have had an indefinite award of higher rate mobility and middle rate care for 20 years following a head injury. In December 17 I was sent forms to apply for PIP. I returned these and was sent a letter from Capita giving a date for an assessment at a centre in the centre of Birmingham some 36 miles from my home. I said I physically and mentally couldn't go to the centre of a city to a place I didn't know to an office that was on the second floor. Capita then offered me a home assessment the next day which they failed to keep. When I asked where they were I was told that the APOINTMENT HAD BEEN CANCELLED as the Assessor wouldn't have time to fit me in. They didn't bother to tell me though !
I was then sent a new appointment in the centre of Birmingham and when I complained they told me to send a medical letter asking for a home assessment. I sent this last Tuesday recorded delivery and confirmed with them that they received it on Wednesday. They said I would be contacted to let me know if they accepted my request but if I had not heard I was to phone today.
I phoned today only to be told it hadn't been dealt with and if I didn't attend the second appointment in Birmingham tomorrow my case would be returned to the DWP. They said I could book a Taxi but the stress of this is really getting to me - any advise please.

I guess you are now at your assessment.

As you had already cancelled one appointment, Capita would not cancel the second one unless they had made a decision to offer a home assessment.

I can't really comment on their not dealing with the GP letter but were your GPs statement unambiguous about your being unable to attend, one of the problems we see regularly on the forum is that these letters are not unequivocal, GPs say that problems might be exacerbated that claimants may have problems attending, which just undermine the letter.

Hi
When I phoned CAPITA this morning they said the letter hadn't been dealt with and they would send it back to DWP but I shouldn't have a problem getting a home assessment when it was returned to them. However I decided I couldn't cope with anymore stress or delays so I went with my carer to the assessment by taxi from my home .
The girl assessing me was surprised I had come for the appointment. I was in there for 90 minutes and was very pleasant and covered everything in depth and was happy for and infact encouraged my carer to speak when I got tongue tied.
I told her that I had a head injury & right hemiplegia following a car accident in 1980. I was rather dismayed that she didn't seem to understand as she later asked me why my right hand didn't work !!
The journey there was very stressful but the assessment Not such a daunting experience as I had imagined .
Now I can relax for a few weeks until I hear back from them . :)

Well done for making it to the assessment.

You can request a copy of the assessment report by contacting the DWP office dealing with your claim next week.

A Decision should only be 2-4 weeks.
