I know that PIP isn't means-tested, and ESA has a 'permitted work' allowance - of, I think, <16 hours per week and earning less than about £100.

My daughter is in receipt of support-group ESA, middle rate care and enhanced rate mobility because of her M.E. condition. She would like to try part-time work of ten hours per week (2x5-hour days) paid at £8 - something per hour, so approx. £80 pre week or so. She hasn't applied for it yet.

I am concerned that she might lose either or both of her benefits because her wanting to work might 'prove', in the eyes of hte DWP, that there is 'nothing wrong with her', when in fact there is. She would still only be able to do that job if we got her an electric powered wheelchair.

Also she would need some sort of assistance, if possible, like a taxi or something, to travel the six miles or so to the proposed workplace, because she can't drive and she can't take public transport.

Do you guys have any advice on these matters, please? What sort of things are likely to make the DWP think she can't have her benefits, and what sort of financial help, if any, is available for her transport? Thanks!

The earnings limit for Permitted Work is £125.50 after accepted reasonable deductions.

The issue as always with claimants doing this is whether it contradicts the reasons why they have received an award in the first place, this applies to both ESA and PIP.

For ESA there is a specific requirement to notify the DWP, there is no such requirement for PIP, however, it could disadvantage your daughter if she fails to notify the DWP. Notifying the ESA department should not result in a reassessment of her claim but I cannot guarantee this for PIP.

So can she in truth say that there are no contradictions, for example if she qualified for ESA through the Substantial Risk Regulations, then the PW would almost certainly be an issue.

Thanks for that, Gordon, that's much appreciated :)

Could I also check about voluntary work; she would like to volunteer for a desk job to see how she gets on...I presume it's the same criteria, then: she needs to be doing something that is not contradicting herbenefit claim.

I also presume that this means that, for example, say a claimant has said they cannot sit up for more than fifteen minutes, then a desk job may well contradict that as you'd be sitting up most of the time. Is that about the size of it?

Yes the issues are the same for voluntary work.

The concerns if there is a conflict is; has there been a Change of Circumstances and when did this happen, has there been an over payment of benefit.
