ESA standing and sitting question ? was created by Dribble
Hi Gordon
Need your advice please !
The question on ESA form asking can you move from one seat to another next to it without help from another person? Answer yes no or varies.
I am unsure which to tick as I can do this only by using support of furniture and aides, but if these were unavailable then I would need help with rising off a person, so I don't know which to tick ? Is an aid classed as help from someone else ?
Help ! Thanks x don't want to mess up , previous pip report states I had difficulties rising from my chair and had to push up against chair arms to rise .

You refer to rising from a chair, I don't believe this is a requirement for the ESA test.

Think of it as two chairs next to each other, you need to move from the one that you are sitting in to the other one, you can do this by raising your body and moving across, or you could slide across without lifting your body (there may be other way to achieve this).

Can you do this without assistance from someone else?

Thanks gordon , yes i can slide across unaided to another chair if i had too , so i guess realistically i should answer yes i can do this task, its a bitmisleading though i feel because getting up an down off a chair is difficult for me as previously stated, so i feel a bit miiffed that i cant score any points on this question, should i just let it go ? Or argue the fact that i have chair raisers on rails etc helping get on an off loo an chairs ? If you can kindly advise . Thanks in advance x

Do you have any problems with remaining seated?

You can make your arguments, the worst they can do is not score you, but you must describe your issues in regard to your moving from one seated position to another, not with standing.

This activity looks at two things; whether the claimant can move from one seated position to another and whether they can remain at a workstation, standing or sitting or moving between the two.

You may be able to score if you cannot remain seated for a reasonable time, cannot remain standing for a reasonable time and most importantly, cannot move between the two positions.
You said that you cannot rise from a seated position without assistance so you could argue that only the time that you can remain seated or the time that you can remain standing in a single period. should be considered.
