DLA to PIP was created by weedybody
Hello All,

This is my first post, so I’ll start by saying thank you for existing ☺
At present I get lower rate care component DLA and I’m in the support group for ESA. I’ve just started the DLA to PIP process. I have several chronic health conditions of which ME/CFS is the most debilitating and most difficult to manage on my own. I also have MH problems (depression and anxiety, possible PTSD due to childhood trauma). I live alone and have not, at present, got anyone to help me with filling in the PIP 1003 form.

To cut a long story short, I’d like to know what will happen if (when) I don’t get the form completed and returned by the date they have given me (21st June)? So far I have only completed the Health conditions part of Q2 and done as much research as I can. I’m so overwhelmed by it all that I have done nothing with it this week.

I understand that they can extend the date, but by how much? I have very little spare energy to devote to the task and may need months rather than weeks to get everything I need sorted out. What happens if I don’t return the PIP form and my DLA is stopped? Can I make another claim for PIP in the future when I’m a bit more together? Will they review my DLA claim if I don’t apply for PIP? (I went to tribunal on it, so hopefully there are no grounds for suggesting that my DLA claim was unjustified).

Sorry, lots of questions. At the moment I feel that losing the money I get now is better than risking my MH, but I can’t do without the help* DLA buys me indefinitely.

Thank you for reading.

* 2 hrs a week carer for basic cleaning, help with shopping, taking me to appointments etc.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

I've moved your post to its own topic, we ask members not to post in other member's topics as it can lead to the wrong advice being given or taken.

You can get a two week extension with minimum effort by phoning the DWP, further extensions may be available at the discretion of a Claims Manager.

If you don't return your form then the most likely outcome by far is that your PIP claim will be closed and four weeks later, your DLA claim. You can make a new claim for PIP at any time.

You do have the option of returning the form with just minimal information on it, this will delay the closure of your claims but will most likely result in a face to face assessment being required, which from your post you may also struggle with.

What evidence do you have r could source?

Thank you, Gordon, and apologies for not creating my own thread.

I've been ill a long time and am well-adapted to my limited circumstances, having explored many avenues in the hope of improving my health. I do what works and don't waste energy on what doesn't. So I have very little good quality, up to date evidence available. Which is one reason I want to delay. I dread the thought of a F2F interview. I did manage to get a home visit for the DLA, but I gather that's difficult for PIP. Attending the assessment centre would, as you say, be very difficult (and costly as I would have to get my carer to take me). My GP surgery has undergone a big upheaval recently and I haven't even met my named GP yet. About a week ago I made an appointment to see her - the first available date was 15th June, when I'll have 15 minutes to get her familiar with my long list of issues and hopefully get her to support my PIP application. So I have no idea yet whether she is even sympathetic to ME/CFS patients. I have no MH support at present, past psychotherapy and medication enables me to manage my issues.

Anyway, that's just background really. You have answered my questions about what will happen if I don't submit the forms in time and I think I'll have to take try to negotiate a longer submission period and if that fails, start a new application when I feel I have everything ready. I'll ask my GP for ask for another referral to the local ME/CFS clinic and get an up to date consultant's assessment of my condition. I think that will be better than hoping to convince a F2F assessor of my difficulties.

Thanks again, just being heard has made me feel less stressed about it all for now.
