DLA to pips was created by 4sunshine
Hi just had letter to change from DLA to Pips and lost to know where to start with all the information. Saw a form to take to go to answer tick box questions but wondered if there is any point if gp won’t know the answers, can anyone advise me on this?

Hello 4sunshine,

I appreciate that this is a daunting task. May I suggest that you take a look at the very comprehensive PIP members guide as your first port of call. More and more frequently we are hearing that GPs will not complete any kind of reports unless the request comes from the Assessment provider or DWP. You can request a copy of your medical records from your GP, for which there may be a charge. The Assessment provider or DWP rarely contact GPs so please be prepared for the fact that your claim may be decided on your completed claim form and any medical evidence and letters of support you provide with your claim and the F2F assessment if you have one.

Hi Thank you for your answer. I have looked at members guides and will have to take it slowly one step at a time as I have difficulty with fibro fog but am so anxious I want to get started. I suppose it wouldn’t be right to send my gp my self assessment form with the gp tick box one? I do have lots of appointment letters from various hospital visits, should I use these? Also have copies of where they have reported back to my gp but they go on for years and regular. How long should I go back please? I am petrified of a one to one assessment so I want to do everything I can to avoid it. Even if it doesn’t help I know I will have done my best. Any advise on this would be so gratefully appreciated thank you.

Hello 4 sunshine,

Yes you need to work your way slowly and methodically through the PIP2 form and if you need an extension of an above the 4 weeks permitted then the DWP are usually to agree to an extension of two weeks. It is unlikely that your GP would complete your self assessment form and it they would provide a report it is often unhelpful because they use language suggesting that theyn are reporting on what they have been told by the patient. i.e. "Mrs ..... told me that she has difficulty walking". The Assessment providers usually consider medical evidence up to two years old and make it clear that they do not want claimants to send appointment letters. If you have any copies of the letters that have been sent to your GP regarding the outcomes of your appointments then these may be helpful. If any of your medical evidence is older than two years but supports the fact that your conditions are long term and unlikely to improve then there would be no harm in including them with your PIP2. It is impossible to say whether you will require a F2F assessment.

Thank you for your reply, I just wondered why the guides say to take form to gp in the first place though. What is the best evidence to send then please.

Your GPP should have some specific knowledge of your problems in regard the PIP activities, they may also be able to infer some problems but there will still be areas that they will have no knowledge of unless you have raised the issues with them previously.

The best way to inform your GP will depend on your GP, unfortunately, some will not engage with you whatever the circumstances, some may accept your claim forms a being a reasonable statement of your problems, others will want to sit down with you to understand your problems.

As to what evidence to provide. Start with diagnosis letters, then letters that make specific references to your problems, for example; a letter that talks about your walking problems,. then letters that refer to your symptoms, again as an example; restricted grip.

Don't send letters and information that doesn't contribute to your scoring points, so appointment letters from three years ago or old blood test results. Those assessing you have limited attention spans and you want them to read the important information and not dilute it with information that is not going to help you to an award.

Whatever evidence you supply, integrate it with your answers on the form, assessors and DMs lack imagination and you need to explain everything to them, including your evidence.
