Communication and Mobility Pip questions - Autism

I am on the waiting list for assessment of Autism. Part of my symptoms are meltdowns and shutdowns and I can become so overwhelmed and overloaded by social and sensory bombardment that I sometimes become mute. How would I describe this and is it something that will be considered in my claim?

In social situations I sometimes just need to get away and without supervision I am likely to just walk away not knowing what I'm doing so I'm often not safe on my own shopping etc, not least if i become mute as described above. It's very restricting. My husband and friends worry about this. How would I also describe this and is this something that will be considered in my claim for mobility?

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

The first thing you need to do is understand the criteria that you are being assessed against, see our PIP Claim guide

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

It seems to me from your post that you understand how to describe your problems you just need to make sure that it is done in the right context, there is a "formula" for answering the questions on the form which you should have a look at.

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Thank you Gordon I'll have a look.

Another problem is that it is a review form that I have to complete and I've not mentioned these things before even though they have been ongoing. The reason I haven't is that, although they cause me big problems, I didn't realise it was pertinent or anything they would consider because I can speak and I can walk. Also due to my severe depression, plus executive functioning difficulties which are also to do with autism, I find it difficult to bring everything to mind to put on the form anyway.

In other words they aren't changes because I have always had the problems and myself and GP are have only recently made the link as well as looking after myself safely and hygienically, housework, preparing food, managing medication etc which I also need to expand on. This is why he has referred me for assessment.

Therefore, I haven't changed as such but need to expand on my previous form due to these things so how do I incorporate it all into the review form when it should only be for changes? In addition I also need to expand on other areas because someone has looked at my previous claim for me and pointed out lots of things I missed

Thank you

I would just explain how you are effected on the form without suggesting that it is a change.

It's unfortunately quite common for claimants to have had some statements about there problems ignored but still to have received an award that they were happy with, all you can do is re-present the information or in your case do so for the first time, Treat is as if you were answering on a PIP2 rather than the AR1 form that you have been sent.

Have you had the autism ASD assessment set of interviews etc and got a copy of the written report stating in black and white that you do ha be ASD? I had trouble because although my problems/difficulties / the things that would score you points have always been there, the DWP/ATOS wouldn't accept things/award me points with things until I had an official diagnosis. I was undergoing the ASD assessment process while battling my pip appeal to the upper tribunal . The dwp also don't really understand that ASD is something you were born with not something that developes
