Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone here could point in the right direction - I helping my niece and her wife to access the correct benefits. She just lost her dad, to whom she was a carer, in a very traumatic way, and I'm concerned that she and her wife are not in receipt of any benefits, and have been refused them previously.
Both women are 26, and have significant health issues. My niece received carer's allowance until the time of my brother's death, and it was stopped as soon as she notified DWP, four weeks later (it took that long to get the death certificate after post mortem etc.) Her wife, who was with my niece when they found the body was off sick for a month afterwards, and will shortly be returning to work if her levels of anxiety and her epilepsy allow. She works for Iceland, and is contracted to do 10 hours weekly on 7.84 an hour. They live in a house belonging to my niece's mother. Apart from a council tax reduction (they currently pay 45 quid a month toward it) neither are now on any benefit. My niece has significant mental health issues with self-harm, anxiety, agoraphobia and alcohol dependence. She is in touch with her GP to find further support.
My question - what benefits should they now be applying for? They are in a part of Suffolk that has not yet unrolled universal credit.
Any feedback gratefully received.

The obvious benefits are ESA if she is unable to work and PIP if she has a long term health condition.

I would suggest that they put their information in to one of the online benefit calculators to get a better idea of what they may be entitled to.

Her options for Income Related ESA may be limited due to her wife working but if she was claiming CA in the last Tax year and has previous paid National Insurance then she should be able to claim Contribution Based ESA.
