Carer advice please was created by Carly
Hi
I am currently completing pip. If I get care component this entitles my carer (parents who look after me) to carers allowance in theory. However I know rules apply. Whoever claims has to earn under £120 a week I believe? Is this dependent on what the other earns?
Also my mother is on a low rate dla and works 16 hours getting the disabled tax credits.
Would she be able to claim old style hb or as we are in a uc area would this not be possible, and how then does this work as would she lose her tax credits? My parents both work and own a home so I don’t even think uc is an option?
It’s a shame I can’t claim the esa top up as I could if lived alone, but I’m trying to work out how my parents could claim instead as they look after me, and whether overall it is worthwhile?
Thanks so much

Only one person can claim Carers Allowance against your DLA or PIP so it is there earnings only that will be considered.
If your parents own their home then they will not be eligible for Housing Benefit.
I suggest that they put their information into one of the online benefit calculators to see what they might be able to claim.

Providing the parent intending to claim CA can provide a minimum of 35 hours of care a week, they do not earn over the earnings limit and you have a qualifying benefit then they can claim CA.
