Hi Gordon
My son receives ESA support group IR and as we are in private rented accomodation, housing benefit. We are considering buying a house in the near future and he will be staying with us as he is disabled .It will be in a Universal Credit area( which is not the case now). My question is,as he won't be claiming housing benefit in the new area ( I presume he can't as he will be living in a bought home) will there be any change to his ESA payments,as he won't be claiming any new beneifits in the new area?

No, there should be no impact on his ESA at this time as he does not need to make a new claim for any of the benefits that come under UC.

Thanks Gordon.
However I'm so confused about the UC stuff.
Does that mean he doesn't have to apply for UC when we move to the UC area or that he does have to?
I just read a lady on here saying she had to move her support group ESA to universal credit, as she had moved to a UC area.
She had ESA support since 2014 till 2019 but had to go on to UC,as she had moved area, not because, as far as I know, she was claiming a new beneifit.
So it's all contradictory to me.........
I'm fine with all other aspects of ESA and PIP etc but can't get a handle on UC...

Moving to a UC region does not mean that he needs to claim UC, he can continue with his existing ESA claim.

The only reason that he would need to claim UC would be if he needed to make a new claim for one of the benefits that come under UC, for example; Housing Benefit but as he will be living with you, that would not apply.
