I was awarded PIP for two years (until 2019) last year following a review. I had previously been awarded a four year award, which should have ended this year but I understand that reviews usually happen a year before an award is due to end.

Yesterday I read that when PIP is awarded for two years the claim is closed after those two years and the benefit discontinued unless re-applied for. Whereas if a longer award is made then a claimant faces a reviews one year before the award ends. Is this the case? It might explain why 10 months before my PIP award is due to end, I have not received a new AR1 form.

There is a cut-off point somewhere between 18 months and two years where the DWP do not reassess an award but renew it, we have seen two-year awards being reassessed (a year early) but it is rare.

The primary differences are the timescales, you'll actually get to enjoy most of your award, they should contact you about 13 weeks before the end of the claim and the fact that you will receive a PIP2 rather than an AR1 form, some might say that this is an advantage.

You will need to monitor the situation as some members have reported that the DWP forgot to notify them on time and you might want to consider contacting them early, the DWP is currently quoting 16 weeks for a new claim.

Thank you very much, that's really helpful.

I will wait until a couple of months before this award runs out then.

Also I should have claimed for the Mobility component last year but selected 'No change' (from previous award of only 4 marks and no mobility component) for that aspect as I didn't want to report a change and risk a Health Assessment (which I would not have been well enough to attend) or potentially lose my Enhanced rate care (which I still definitely qualify for).
However should I send a 'Change of circumstances' in one month before my award ends to explain that my Care needs remain the same but my Mobility is poorer?

There's no point sending notice of a change if you are going to wait until your existing award ends, you will be starting from scratch anyway.
