ESA Versus Pension Credit was created by wolfchile
My wife claims ESA as a couple. We get disability premiums. I am 65 in December. I have heard someone say that we should claim pension credit when I am able to in November as currently you can claim as a couple even if one of you is younger. They said people should do it now as they will be worse off under universal credit which has now come to my area.

I wanted to ask if we would be better off doing that in November when I am eligible to claim it. Or could we be worse off?
Currently my wife gets money to cover us both. I don't get anything in own right except my private pension £53 per week which is deducted from ESA amount. My wife gets contributory and income related ESA

I appreciate this forum and advice I have had from Gordon. There is nowhere whatsoever in my area to ask for advice. There are no welfare rights provision whatsoever. I cannot understand these benefit changes. ‎

I would get face to face advice from a trained advisor, do an internet search for "welfare advice" with your postcode, town or county, they can go through your options and should be able to give you an idea of what you will receive.

If you are currently entitled to Income RElated ESA (the Premiums) then you will also be entitled to Pension Credit, your wife will still be entitled to her ESA(CB) which will be deducted from the PC.

At some point in time, the rules for claiming PC will change and you will only to do so if both claimants have reached PC age, this will not affect existing claims.

Thanks I have tried and I feel ill with exhaustion. Thre is no welfare benefits advice at all. No face to face just benefit calculator which just tell me to claim universal credit so not useful for my individual circumstances. I don't know what others do about trying to get advice.. There is nothing face to face.

Have you looked at your Local Authorities web page, most still have a Welfare Rights office?

Failing that try Age UK.
