Hi! Apologies if this has been answered before but what is the maximum length of time your doctor can sign you off for that is acceptable to the DWP?

If anyone could help I would appreciate it. I am moving into a Universal Credit area and I understand you have to submit sick notes again so I was wondering how long your GP is allowed to sign you off for that is acceptable to the DWP?

My apologies, I did reply but obviously my "submit" failed for some reason.

For the first six months, your Fit Notes cannot be for more than three months each after that, they can be for any period your GP is prepared to put on them.

Thanks Gordon.

How long do you have to keep submitting them for?

I forgot to add that I am currently in the ESA support group and moving into a UC area so will I have to provide sick notes for the same length of time?

You shouldn't have to provide Fit Notes at all as the transfer of your existing award should be seamless, however, the reality appears to be that there is no automatic mechanism for this to be done and you will be reliant on the award being transferred manually.

Best guess is no more than eight weeks but I have only seen a few cases where timescales have been mentioned so this is very much a guess.
