care of address was created by Logan2
good afternoon to all,
just a quick query regarding care of address, we have our sons mail being sent to our address as c.o.a and we received a letter from the dwp saying it will affect our benefit because our son is using our address to get his letters sent to.
now we went down to our local dwp office and according to the lady we spoke to its always been like that? i told her i,ve never ever heard of benefit being affected because our son who does not live with us gets his mail sent here.
could someone please clarify if this is correct what the lady says from dwp or is it wrong. any input regarding this would be gratefully appreciated. many thanks Logan.

You don't mention which benefits are involved, yours and your sons but I would assume the issue is related to an assumption that he is living at your address as well. If it becomes an issue then you may need to provide proof of your son's actual address, can you do this?

Hi Gordon, thank you for the quick reply, my son had asked myself and my wife a few months ago if it was ok to use our address as contact for letters to be sent to weather it being dwp or anything associated with him, we didnt see a problem with that as he,s used our address in the past as a coa, he does not live with us i am on pip and esa income as for my son he is on esa/job seekers, i cant confirm which of the 2 as he just put a sick note into dwp so am assuming its going to be esa which i,ll comfirm the next time i see him.
my wife and i when we went to the dwp said: how can he give an deffinite address if he,s from accomodation to accomodiation as he has recently parted with his g/f. my wife then goes on to ask... if this is the case for us and our son what about people who are homeless non address? she failed to answer this question so i am thinking she may have made a mistake as she was adamant that if his mail is sent to our address even though he does not live here it may affect our income. and i would be grateful for your opinion regarding this situation. very much appreciated Logan.

Don't assume the Call Centre staff know what they are talking about!

As he is an adult I can't see how even if he was living with you, how he would impact on your benefits as he would not be counted as part of your household, the only exception to this would be Housing Benefit but you don't mention receiving this.

Hi Gordon, thank you again for the quick reply,
my thoughts to gordon but she was adamant that was the case, so i thought where best to ask this question..here :-)
as for the housing component yes i do receive housing benefit, but i fail to see why having a coa affects any of my benefits as i established with the dwp lady he does not live or reside at my home. but she was very very adamant that if i get his post sent to my address then yes it would affect us benefit wise.
i,d be very grateful to read your view on this Gordon. much appreciated Logan.

As I said the only thing I can think of is that they were associating the CoA with your son living with you, having a non-dependant living with you would affect the amount of HB you are entitled to.
