Applying for DLA for the first time.

Hi everyone,

My husband has never claimed DLA despite being awarded 80% industrial injuries many years ago. He has a modest private pension and we never wanted to become dependent on too many benefits. The current threat of means testing IB has forced us to review our situation. Does anyone know if his award of 80% disablement (life), will help make applying for DLA any easier? Any advice would be much appreciated.

It should make no differance as one person with 80% award has different needs to someone else with 80% award

DLA will look at his needs for for with care and getting around

Of course being awarded 80% means he is lily to have needs but till you take a good hard look at them you dont know what for sure they are make notes keep a diary add up the time when you help with meals washing dressing helping with drugs if they are taken help getting to the loo and bathing

then there is help getting around can he get around ? how far can he walk ????

The guides on here are very good but the first place to start is call the DLA help line ask for a claim pack and read it then down laod the stuff from here take notes and off you go!!!

Thanks for your reply Dave. I have been reading many of the notes in the members section on DLA and ESA and found them very enlightening e.g. the future of DLA is not looking too rosy either. I was intending to apply for DLA in order to claim carers allowance when my husbands contributory IB claim had been migrated to ESA. I was hoping that this would be at least a year away but events, i.e. means testing proposals which may take away his IB altogether, have overtaken me. I will however wait until the details of the spending review are announced before making any decision. If, as I suspect, the news is not good.... budge up and make room for two more in the workhouse
