Hi Honeybear,

When he said that this was the only treatment left for you to try was it because you have already gone through lancing, drainage different antibiotics etc.

The reason I ask is if all else has been tried, then the chances are that you will continue to suffer and this current drug is just something else which is left available for you to consider.

If you havnt already, you could have a look at the various HS forums on line and you will be able to obtain some info on lots of things people have tried, some with sucess but more failures unfortunately.

With regards to your question would your refusal to take the drug have an affect on your medical and be seen as negative, I think you would be best discussuing your concerns with your GP and ask for a letter to support your decision as to why you feel this drug would not be for you.

If you have genuine worries then the support of your GP would be very helpful to you.

Kathy

Thank you very much for your help.Yes Dave, this disease causes depression.

Then you have very good grounds not to take the stuff, and if you have not yet been asked about your mental health you should point that out to the doc... bet he wont say its for you then :)

Iam suffering with a (rare) Skin condition,Hidradenitis Suppurativa.Unfortunately not a lot is known about this condition, and there is no cure. Iam now at the stage were its causing me a great deal of pain and distress. At my last appointment with my Dermatologist,he informed me that there's only one option of treatment left to try,Roaccutane. He said that this Drug has many unpleasant side effects, and it might not work. He was not joking,he gave me a leaflet (4 A4 pages long)! This Drug,in my opinion,is very dangerous.

My question is: If I decide not to take this drug, could this work against me at the Atos medical?

I would be grateful for any advice.

Hi Honeybear,

Claimants have a right to refuse treatment be it drugs or surgery without fear of losing benefit.

Decision Makers and Appeal Tribunals can only look at your condition as it was when your claim was made, not after some proposed treatment be it drugs or surgery.

There are several Commissioners Decisions ( now called Upper Tribunals) all of which support the claimants rights to refuse treatment. For example :

R(M)1/95 states that a claimant is entitled to refuse medical treatment. Correct test is circumstances that apply to existing condition. See also CSDLA/171/1998. R(DLA)10/02 states that tribunals should consider whether refused treatment (unless reasonably refused) might mean that needs are not reasonably required. CDLA/3925/1997 adopts a similar line.

See also the NHS Choices website Do I have the right to refuse treatment?

Hope this helps.

Good luck :)

Jim

Hi Kathy
Yes I have had different Antibiotics, the last one was Metronizadole for 4 month, which did nothing. The one he wanted me to take (Clindamycin,Doxycycline)I cant take, they inflame my Esophagus. I had a few Lesions lanced,no Surgery. My Dermat.told me that there's only a 40% chance Surgery will work, and he wouldn't recommend it. My GP seems to think that surgery will cure this!!!!I have spoken about my worries with my GP,but he seems to be 100% for this Drug.
I only got diagnosed last June, after 17 years of running about with this, but since January 10 I haven't been free of any abcesses.I have tried many different things over the years, but without any success.

With Kind regards.
