Funeral costs was created by lild
This is posted on behalf of family member.

Has been turned down for help with costs, and said in letter, they think it foolish that she take on the costs, they believe there is person closer to the deceased.

This is a grandaughter who lived with her g mother, and cared for her, also on carers allowance and tax credits. The deceased daughter died a few yrs ago.
There is also a grandson, who does not live with them and on benefits too. Only other relative is the deceasts brother, who would not be closer or responsible for the funeral.

Can anyone help advise what the dwp mean by someone closer.
Thank you

I think the DWP have an expectation that perhaps another child of the grandmother would apply for the payment, rather than a grand child.

The following site explains some of the rules

www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits...Bereaved/DG_10018660

If there is no one closer then the grand daughter should contact the DWP again and explain this.

Hope this helps.

The grandaughter and grandson are the closest relatives.
Cared for by grandaughter who lived with her and on benefits.

The deceaseds brother is the only other relative, as a sibling I dont think the costs would fall to him.

I think the dwp just trying it, to see if they will query it. Its awful at a time when the grandaughter has no other family and has to deal with what should be straighforward claim.
