ESA Support Group Reviews was created by Chris_63
I just wanted to ask if anyone has recently received a new ESA50 questionnaire that is already in receipt of ESA and is in the Support Group.

A friend of mine has received a copy of the new ESA50 from Atos. He was awarded ESA Support Group back in October last year, and was not asked to attend a medical. His claim was backdated to June 2010 so I am wondering if this is an annual reveiw?

Any information would be greatfully received - he has called the DWP and is awaiting a reply back, but as you can imagine this has provoked much anxiety and real stress for him.

Thanks

Whilst the re-assessment period is usually longer for members of the Support Group, there is no exemption.

Hey Chris

I had a review of my ESA claim as I am in the support group. They reviewed in Feb of last year and kept me in the Support group without telling me, so I got my MP onto it and had another review, same outcome. It would seem to suggest that if you are put into the Support group that there is possibility that you are not going to have to have another medical.

Hi Gordon

Many thanks for your reply - I was totally not aware of ESA reviews, is this something new from 4th April 2011 or has it always been the case???

In all the literature I have read about ESA Support Group there seems never to be a specific reference to reviews and the time scales of these reviews?

Many thanks

Hey Andy

Many thanks for the information - could I ask how long you had been in receipt of ESA before your claim was reviewed? Did you originally go for a medical or were you what I call "fast tracked" into the support group on the evidence of your WCA?

Cheers for now

No, this is not new, there have never been examptions to re-assessment of ESA claims, unlike Incapacity Benefit.

Now, I'm being careful to say assessment and not medical, because for many members of the Support Group, a decision can be made from the ESA50.

In a more general sense, whilst the Support Group is for claimants who have the most debilitating illnesses, not all of these are permament, some may recover naturally, some due to treatment, and some due to adaption.

Taking the opposite view, it is also possible that many will worsen and re-assessment will allow them access to additional benefits that they would not have got otherwise.
