You can do it over the phone, my wife changed her payment details recently.

My reference to it being a bad idea was because I didn't think you should be able to do it that way, sorry for any confusion :)

No problem changing account, but they need to verify your identity before they can pay your benefit into another (possibly someone else's) bank account.

You can phone to ask for the form or details of how to change the account.

Sorry for contradicting you Gordon.

Are you sure it's possible to change bank details over the phone?

What security checks did they carry out to make sure your wife was genuine?

Standard DWP security questions, and I can't believe it either, yes it was convenient, but...

I am aware of a claimant on another forum who went to change their address and was unable to do so because someone had already done it, they couldn't reset it as the address was one of the security questions they were asked, no idea if they ever got access to their benefits again.

Thanks Gordon.

I haven't a clue where they stand legally, but I would guess that unless they have written conformation that the claimant has chosen to have his benefit paid into another account, they would still be liable and own the claimant.

Of course he would just have to starve for a few months while it's all sorted out!

Hi All,

Whilst the DWP will accept a change of circumstances, e.g. a change of address over the 'phone, they will not accept a change of bank or building society verbally,
it has to be in writing.

So you need to contact the office that pays your benefit by letter or e-mail and give them your new bank/building society details.

Based upon my my experience of moving 16 times in 43 years of marriage :woohoo:

Moderators Edit: This information was based upon my own experience in relation to the benefits I receive which are State Retirement Pension & DLA. Gordon has brought it to my attention that he was able to change bank details for DLA by 'phone.

However, even if that is the case, I'd still advise members to do it in writing, by recorded delivery, which can be tracked & traced on the Royal Mail website
