DISABLED TAX DISC was created by Loriann
I hate being labelled "disabled". Is there any way I can have my tax disc NOT stating DISABLED ? I am buying a car through motability ? I dont mind paying for the tax myself .

I can only suggest you contact Motability as they are responsible for providing the tax discs to you as the leasee., but expect to pay a lot of money to get rid of a very small label.

If you're getting a car through Motability it's being paid for by your Disability Living Allowance. I'm afraid that you've already compromised by accepting that label. You've gone a step further by using the Motability scheme which is tied to what is still usually labelled as "disability".

I think most of the alternatives are just different ways of saying the same thing.

"My mind or my body will not cooperate with the more usual ways in which the world runs. This happens to a degree that seriously disadvantages me in a society which can help me operate on a more equal footing with those who do not have the problems of mind or body which trouble me. This help involves some financial acknowledgement of the extra costs I have, and some practical arrangements so my ability to function is society is maintained."

Some numbers of decades ago the word "cripple" was still be used. Then "handicapped" became the acceptable phrase and currently we are "disabled." Doubtless there will be another label along soon.

I sympathise with your dislike of the label, but really all you can do is to replace it with another word that means the same thing.

Whilst we are dealing with the benefits system, we have to accept that they are going to categorise us. Large systems of any kind have to work that way - you get tagged by region ("Northerner"), age ("youth", "pensioner"), educational status ("graduate") and all the rest.

If you've gone through the system (or the system has gone through you  ), then you've already indicated that you are prepared to take the label. I'd just get used to ignoring the word on the tax disc. In all probability no one except you and the odd traffic warden will notice it anyway.

Anyway, the DWP has decided to re-classify everyone once PIP comes in (they want it done by the end of 2014). You may find that they'll decide you're not disabled after all.

I know this issue came to light a couple of years back (a then colleague did quite a bit of work on this). The reason why it was raised was because of, in the London area in particular, the relative value of stolen blue badges (used to avoid parking charges etc)

A car with 'disabled' written on the tax disc was seen to have a higher chance of having a blue badge located inside (whether it was on display or not) and was thus the vehicles were a target for blue badge thieves.

However it was the DVLA (who issue the vehicle excise licence/tax disc) who would not change he wording on the disc. Their view was the Blue Badge should not be left in the car if the badge wasn't in use. (However that would not stop thieves breaking into cars anyway to search for one!).

As the DVLA wouldn't budge on changing the wording, the matter was thus left hanging.

Perhaps not an entirely accurate statement, as the OP may be a War Pensioner using the War Pension Mobility Supplement to pay for a car on the Motability scheme (the OP does not state what benefit/supplement he/she uses to finance the Motability car).

Thus, for those in that position, their is no mention of your highlighted word 'Disability' in their entitled supplement thus why should they be ''already compromised by accepting that label''?
