DLA application help at night. was created by mothernurture
Hi, i have a question about question 49 and 51 of the DLA form relating to care at night, The first relates to help at night the second to wether you need someone awake to watch over you at night.

I am unsure what to put or where it fits. I have Agoraphobia, M.E and Lung fibrosis/Asthma.
My basic problem is that i have been unable to spend a night alone in my house for over 2 years as i become extremely upset, afraid and agitated and then cannot sleep at all. this exacerbates all my symptoms. My husband is usually there but if he has to go away for work etc then i have to have someone else there. They do not necessarily need to be awake but to be available if i do wake up and need reassurance. Due to my M.E i have very broken sleep and disturbing dreams, the lung problems make me afraid of not being able to breathe (i had pneumonia and pleurisy whern this all started 3 years ago) i wake frequently and become very afarid if there is no one there to help or calm me or reassure me.
Sorry this is so long and personal but i cant work out what to do for the best with the form.
Many thanks, Justy.

Hi Justy

The best course of action is to read through the B&W guides about claiming Disability Living Allowance, as it contains full details on how to complete a DLA claim form, which you will find here -

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/dla/#dlaclaims

We are unable to give specific advice about your claim based on your night time needs. May I suggest that if you don't find the answer in the guides, that you seek face to face advice from someone such as a Welfare Rights Officer at an Advice Centre.

I hope this is of assistance.

Thanks Michael for your reply -yes i have read the benefits and work guide. I apologise that it was too specific a question - i misunderstood the forum and thought another member might reply as i am unable to seek a face to face with a welfare rights advisor.
Thanks again, Justy.

Hi justy

I do understand that you are unable to go out as you referred to agoraphobia. In some cases Welfare Rights Officers are able to visit you at home. May I suggest that you contact either your local Citizens Advice Bureau or DIAL to see if they can help.

I have revisited B&W guide to claiming DLA there is advice on completing questions 49 & 51 which may be applicable to your needs. You will need to say how your problems affect you and the number of times at night you need help, whether you get that help or not is immaterial. So if your husband is not giving the care, the fact that you need care from another person is the factor.

I hope this is of help.

Justy

You're more than welcome. Please let us know if you need any further general information. We are happy to help. I do know how difficult the DLA claim form is to complete, both lengthy & repetetive.

Hope it all goes well for you.

Kind regards

Michael
