I have my first ESA review under the new descriptors soon and I have mobility issues about using a manual wheelchair. I don't qualify for an electric wheelchair but a manual wheelchair can be too much.

I have MS and find it hard to walk 30 metres and when I go out I have to use my scooter locally and my w/c in my Motability car. The problem that I have is that one some days I am able to push my wheelchair 50 metres and at others 100 metres. How on earth am I supposed to fill in the ESA form as there is no way of knowing how am going to be one a given day due to the fluctuating nature of MS. There are times when I cannot push a w/c 50 metres for days or weeks and then I am able to push it 100 metres. If I fill it in at 50metres I make my self souns worse than I am, and at 100 metres distance it doesn't seem as bad. What do do I do about filling in the form.

I have filled it in as:

Due to neurological deficit caused by the Multiple Sclerosis I am unable to walk more than 30 metres using lateral, and sometimes, bilateral support, due to neuromuscular fatigue, pain, numbness, stiffness and balance problems in my legs before I need to sto and I am unable to do this repeatedly and I have to use a wheelchair to continue. I am unable to repeatedly mobilise 50 metres in a manual wheelchair due to neuromuscular fatigue and pain in my left arm. Due to the problems that I have with mobilising as well as continence issues, my quality of life is severely restricted. If I wish to go out locally then I have to use my mobility scooter, if I wish to go out further afield then I have to take my car and use my wheelchair, I do not go out unless I have somebody with me if I am needing to go out any for any distance so that my wheelchair can be pushed. Due to this I am unable to go shopping and I have to use the internet for my grocery and retail shopping.

We cannot give personal advice due to the limits of the forum. Please see here

In general terms, you should talk about your condition terms of the periods you are affected, e.g. for the majority of the time..., 3 days a week..., most of the day..., for a couple of hours a day...

You only need to carry out a physical activity until you experience significant discomfort or exhaustion, in addition, you must be able to repeat an activity within a reasonable period of time, if you cannot, then you can argue that you cannot carry out the activity.

Hope this helps
