I get Incapacity Benefit, and also an occupational pension which rises annually on 1 September.

This means the DWP send me a form IB6 ’About your pension income’ every year, and I have to send it back with a pension payslip. But this year they have sent me three forms in the last month, and the third has handwritten on it in red biro ‘3rd request – if you do not reply to this form your benefit will be suspended’.

I did actually send the first form back, with payslip – and this third form arrived in the same post as the payslip they were returning to me, so they obviously have had the first form.

I will be writing to them to point this out. But I am a bit shocked that they can threaten to stop my benefit on the strength of a scrawled note, rather than an official letter. Has anyone else encountered this?

Hi E,

Someone I know had a very similar experience recently.

She had kept a copy of the first correspondence that she had sent back to DWP.

When she received the reminder, she sent copy of the first correspondence back to DWP, by recorded delivery, and asked where her payslips where?.

She also rang the DWP the same day stating her case, was informed that it stated on her file that the claim had been successfully reviewed some days earlier, and it must be an admin error.

A few days later she received payslips in post, all was O.K.

I would advise that you write stating your case keeping copy, by recorded delivery.

You can also phone as a back up, note the time of phoning, and get the name of who you speak to.

I would not rely on phoning alone, as you may need written confirmation, if it is not resolved correctly.

This smacks of incompetence, and is potentially very distressing.

You might want to ask your MP to get involved. It's really easy to send your MP a message from this website > www.writetothem.com . Remember to include your NI number and address.

I've now sent them a mildly snotty letter, but if they do suspend my benefit I will certainly get my MP involved.

Thanks to you both for replying.
