Hi

I have been on I.B. for approx 14 yrs now and I have been doing unsupported permitted work for the last 5 years. I have ME/Fibro and a few other problems. I have managed to find an employer who allows me to work 3 hours a week doing filling for which I receive £20. I can go into work at any time during the week so long as I do my 3 hrs, I can do 1hr on a Monday and 2 hrs on a Friday it's totally up to me - it's 100% flexible and that is the key, it has to be flexible because I cannot tell what I'm gonna be like from one day to the next, but I strive to do this work because of the social inclusion factor, it gets me out of the house and assists with my self-esteem and depression. I had worked full-time for over 22 years until I became I'll. I am usually totally exhausted after pushing myself to do this, but it also gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, a feeling of being 'normal' albeit for 3 hrs a week! I would do anything to get my health back and be able to do more but I can't. Being in the house on your own every day is soul destroying, so being able to spend a little time amongst people is hugely important to me. I had my medical today for transfer from I.B. to ESA, so will be waiting for the postman again now with trepidation!

Regards
Twinkle

Hi Twinkle - I am showing my age but I used to love that comic when I was a little girl.

Thank you for describing your experience of permitted work - I can fully understand what a difference it makes to your life.

Fingers crossed regarding your medical.

Hi Twinkle that is just fantastic and I fully understand how it makes you feel being able to do some type of work :)
I think your employer should be in the media as a leading example to all Employers. From my own experience my employer would not work with the disability advisor at the jobcentre when I tried to return on permitted work, my employer believed adjustments put in place 2yrs earlier should have still been suitable for me which they were not. Employers need to learn key things to support people in the workplace with illness and disability and they are-
1.Flexibility
2.Understanding of disability in the workplace.
3.Reqular reviews of the situation :)
Twinkle I believe Special Employers like yours are very hard to find because to many who beecome ill and disabled are dismissed by their employer, so if all employers worked with us, the majority of us would still be in the workplace doing permitted work. I think the Goverment should introduce tax fines to Employers who do not employ a certain number of disabled staff in there companies and employers who dismisses staff for becoming disabled.
Twinkle best wishes to you, you are doing amazing
