I sent in my Esa and Dla forms on the same day, as my Dla was due for renewal. I received a letter from Esa to say i have to go for a medical on the 23rd november. I have heard nothing from my Dla. Do you think they are waiting for the outcome of my medical?

I couldn't comment on the possibilities of the scenario in your question.

However, it has been known for the DWP DM to use an ESA medical report in evidence on coming to a decision on an award of DLA and visa versa.
