Hi
I have looked on various websites regarding this issue and am completely confused!
I am currently the ESA support group - contribution based- and am in the process of applying for early retirement on the grounds of ill health. The example given on the gov website is that if you had a weekly pension of £100, then £85.00 being the cut off point, 50% of the difference of £15.00 would be halved leaving a payment of £7.50 of ESA or is this a £7.50 deduction from the ESA payment? I am totally confused!

However, should a private pension be £200 per week would this mean that the ESA payement would be 57.50? Or would this amount be deducted from the ESA rate? It
It has confused me as I have read the government website and it imies that the higher your private pension, the higher your weekly payment of ESA, surely this cannot be accurate?

Please could someone enlighten me on this.

Thanks

You deduct half the excess from your ESA, so in your first example your ESA would be reduced by £7.50 and in the second by £57.50.

Hi Gordon

Thank you for clarifying that, as it is not made clear on the government website. I have absolutely no idea what my pension will be yet but that has been helpful for me for when it is all finalised.

Thanks

Hi again

Sorry if I sound as if I'm repeating myself re the private pension and the ESA, but I have been informed I have an option to commute some income into lump sum- which will leave me with lower pension income for life, and to help me make the decision I am wondering if there is a cut off point at which no ESA is paid in terms of pension income.
For example if my weekly private pension was £250.00 would I receive any contribution based ESA at all? And if so would this cease at 67 when I believe my state pension would start?
Many thanks

HI,

You are asking for advice of a personal nature in relation to a private pension which as moderators is not within our remit. We cannot deal with state pension enquiries either
because the law in that area is complex, especially if the person on SP is also in receipt of an occupational or private pension.

You can get a state pension forecast from the Pensions Service Getting a State Pension forecast

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Jim

Hi Jim

Thanks for your response.

Do you know if ESA does have a cut off point though? Is there an income above which no contributory ESA payments are made? Or will I need to contact Jobcenter plus to find this out?

Thanks
