My ESA 'experience'

My ESA 'experience' was created by gdcornwall
I injured my back 22+ years ago at work and as a result have been unable to work since.
During those 22 years I have had both good and very bad/cynical experiences of the benefit's system, which has helped cause bad depression on top of my chronic pain and poor mobility.
Perhaps it was understandable therefore when I received the ESA forms I filled them in with some degree concern based on past experiences.

I was placed into the Work-Related Group without having a medical, but in with the letter was a leaflet about Job Seekers which confused me somewhat...(later confirmed that the leaflet it was a mistake). It has to be said that there is still conflicting advice given on occasions when phoning DWP departments, but in all fairness IMO there has been a marked improvement from my earlier experiences with DSS staff.
It was also decided that I should receive Work-Related ESA for two years.

I guess partly through mistrust of the system, part ignorance and of course for my own peace of mind and information, I asked for a written explanation and also to reconsider their decision.
Due to the back-log that the DWP has these days, the letter inviting me for an interview at my local Job Centre arrived before any decision was made.

Whilst the letter stated 'interview' I was told over the phone that it just be would a 'discussion' about my circumstances and see if any help could be given. I attended as requested (with my wife for help and moral support) and IMO it wasn't an interview, but quite an informal (reasonably short) discussion. I have to say as well that I would welcome the chance to be able to work again, but my physical limitations/condition prevent that from happening.

Today I received a telephone call from the DWP to inform me that they had reconsidered their initial decision.
I still am to remain in the Work-Related Group, but they have extended the length of 'award' from 2 years to 3. (That will take me past my 64th birthday).......I can cope with that.

My thanks to the guys running this site, and all the information that is so helpful for people like myself.

The stronger ones amongst you may well say go to appeal, but 'mentally' I feel exhausted and drained, but also so very relieved.

I count my blessings too, as I have recently lost a very dear friend who suffered the last few weeks of her life in a way that no one should, which really does put life into perspective.

This sounds a much better deal for you. I hope you won't be put under any pressure to find work. I also got the JS leaflet with my ESA decision letter; I think that was more than a coincidence.
