Experience: Applying for re-assesment of DLA rate?

A year ago I was downgraded from middle rate to lower rate care after appeal when my DLA benefit was stopped after five years.

Since then, my circumstances have changed somewhat (I'm now divorced - my wife was my unpaid carer - and living alone) and I now have medical reports supporting my claim for a higher (middle) care rate.

I have been independently (not the DWP) advised to make a new DLA claim.

Does anyone have experience of either reporting new circumstances or making a fresh claim in order to have their rate(s) reviewed?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi JD,

You should check out our FAQ's situated in the Spotlights Area above the forum at regular intervals as much useful information can be gained, see :

You can search the forum for previous threads on a particular topic from here :

With regards to a change in circumstances with DLA, see here :

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/dla/#dlachanges

You can also access all our DLA Claims Guides from here :

DLA Guides

As you may be aware there is some risk involved when reporting a change in circumstance, and asking for a review with DLA, in that the whole award will be looked at again.

If you have any concerns that there may be a risk in that any existing award may be reduced or stopped, you may wish to gain face to face advice, where any such scenario can be risk assessed. See :

Where to get advice?

Once you have read the DLA Guides, and the relevant information in our FAQ's, if you then have any general questions, please come back to the forum, and we will try to help.
