"ESA Tip 3. Why answering the questions in the ESA50 questionnaire might not be a good idea..

You also need to be very wary of the tick boxes that ask how often you have problems with things. For example, there are a number of tick boxes which say ‘It varies’. This is an extremely unhelpful measurement indeed. Choosing it makes it very easy for the decision maker not to award you points on the grounds that there’s no evidence you have problems often enough to qualify."

having read through all the 'guides' on how best to fill out the ESA50 questionnaire, i dont know whether to tick NO, YES, or IT VARIES..

because i have so many different health problems, im confused as they can each occur at different times during the day or week, or sometimes all at once..

Hi CO,

I think that the advice that you refer to with regards to simply ticking boxes, especially to "It varies" is simply saying that you should also go into details of how and when it varies.

An answer of Yes or No, can obviously be finite, so even if either is ticked, try to add relevant information.

The idea is to try and stop the ATOS HCP, or the DWP DM, (Who has no medical qualifications) making incorrect assumptions, and therefore drawing incorrect conclusions.

Remember that to be classed as suffering from a limitation, you only have to suffer with it for the majority of the time.

To be classed as being able to carry out a task, you must be able to carry it out, Repeatedly, Reliably and Safely, with Reasonable Regularity.

It may be helpful to break down a typical day, over a typical week, and write down how often, and for how long you suffer the limitations as a result of your medical conditions.

For example, I suffer xxxx for on average xxxx mins/hours, xxxx per day, this could then be added up as a weekly average.

It is never, and can never be an exact account of your limitations.

Hope this helps.
