What to do ? was created by Noodles
Hello,

I first appied for DLA some 15 years ago after botched spinal surgery left me in agony and the innibilty to look after myself. My wife helped me fill the forms in for DLA,I had a medical, then received the high rate for Mobilty (could hardly walk)and the middle rate for care (cannot cook or wash myself ect)for LIFE. More recently we noticed this wording had been changed to 'Indefinate Period' ?? That was 12 years ago, then out of the blue,in October last year,I had a request from the DWP to once again fill in those dreaded DLA forms, they gave the reason along the lines of 'wanting to make sure we receive the correct level of DLA' or something. We filled the forms in once again, explaining my condition was getting worse as I now suffer from Thoraticspondilosis and have a sever hip problem as another MRI scan revealed I now have arthritus in my hip. We now have been told by the W&P that they require 'further information'and we have now been told to expect a doctor we dont even know to come for a visit to our home (Im bedbound now btw)next week. The problem is,5 weeks ago, after the forms had already been sent to the D&W regarding my DLA re-application,I had a bad fall which has now left me almost bedbound and in cronic pain. My GP has put me on Oxycontin and ordered complete bed rest because my sciatic nerve and spinal issues are giving me hell and its causing me to have further problems with tiolet issues, as well as not being able to keep still or stand up at all now. How do I tell the doctor what I can and cannot do,when the answers to my latest DLA application did not allow for my latest fall, which quite franky has now made my live a misery now ?

It is what it is, you can only explain your situation both before the accident and after. From the sound of it, you have good supporting evidence that explains how you were before the accident.

Have a look at the following FAQ.

DLA medical examination

Hello again,

Yes,I have read the DLA medical test, looks a real pain but it has to be done now,all I can do is tell it the way it is and try and make the doctor aware of my issues and disabilty issues. I have also managed to get a written report from my Authapidic surgeon from June 2011, when he assessed my latest MRI scan, it not only showed continued and significant deteriation of the spine vis spondilosis of the thorax, but also confirmed hip arthritus which was given as a 50% loss of movement apparently. I had the latest MRI scan done privately, because I was in so much pain and the thought of waiting 4 months for a scan made it feel even worse. I have kept the recipe for the private MRI scan, would it be an good idea to show the doctor this, and the surgeons latest report do you think ?

Thanks for the reply btw.

Quite disturbing for want of a better word. The Doctor was very abrupt, only wanted yes and no answers, never showed any thought or compassion for my desease and wouldent listen to my problems at all really. I have been getting the high rate of Mobility and middle rate for care for over 15 years now due to my condition, but after what can only be best discribed as a now you see me now you dont whistle stop visit,Im starting to worry and dont really know what to expect now ? Just for the record,I suffer from cronic hip and spinal spondilosis, having had a double spinal fushion, and ongoing degenerative problems for years. I have always needed my carer for getting around, and she helps me with my washing and tiolet needs and has done since my operation way back in 1995. I've had a fall recently, which has left me all but bedbound for several weeks now, and this has simply made my current situation even worse because I now need 24 hours care and cannot get out of bed at present. The doctors asked me about my needs, asked if I could cook a meal, looked at my medication(Oxycontin)and refused to examin me propery because he 'did not want to hurt me even more' ?? Anyway its all in the hands of the DWP now I suppose, although what the outcome willl be now is anyones guess ?

Thoughts anyone ?

Hi N,

Other members might like to comment, however there is no "set time", we have had reports of anything from a week or so to a matter of months.
