I am new to this forum, due to severe fybromyalgia my mobility is restricted to less than 50 metres.Read somewhere that being able to use a microwave the lima software calculates this as being able to walk 200 metres is this so. If so would not qualify for the support group. How can i avoid this unfair assumption. Regards Stu.

Hello and welcome, Stu.

I am not an expert but, as far as I am aware, the ability to mobilise and the ability to prepare/cook meals are two different descriptors. The ability to use a microwave should not impact on the mobility descriptor.

I am sure one of the mods will be along soon, they have much more knowledge than me!

As far as I am aware there is nothing in the WCA descriptors which mentions that if you can use a microwave you can walk 200 metres. In fact, there is no correlation between walking distance and being able to use a microwave.

You need to be aware that the previous ESA "walking" descriptor was replaced by a "mobilising" descriptor following an amendment to the ESA Regulations in 2011. This means that if you can propel a manual wheelchair more than 50 metres even if you don't use one, you will not qualify for the support group using this descriptor.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains how to navigate the site.

Welcome to Benefits and Work

Whilst the LiMa software and the ATOS "doctors" do make assumptions based non your day to day activities, I think even they would have to stretch to connect using a microwave and being unable to mobilise :)

If you're going through the ESA assessment process or expecting to have to, then you should have a look at our ESA Claim guides.

I thought the cooking angle etc came under DLA and the new PIPs, and walking/mobility under ESA and DLA/PIPs. But perhaps I too am mudled.

I looked into going onto PIPs 4 years ago when it first reared its ugly head. Started with talking to the OT/GP/DHSS etc and was lead to believe then it was not for people such as myself but would only be for new cases and not to worry about it. How wrong that info was.

Thanks for your advice expecting my review any time now.But knew i had read somewhere,it's on the ABC OF ESA site.It states that nobody can know the logic that connects the computer generated sentances to the scoring system. It says one of their clients will never know why LIMA decided he could walk 100 metres and various other mobilising factors on the basis that he can usually use a microwave.
