ESA & Severe Disability Premium was created by dellboy
You may remember my post from a few days ago. I`ve just found out I`ve been put in the support group of ESA & was wondering about Severe Disability Premium. I phoned the DWP & was told that I need to fill in a IS10 form to apply. Oh god I thought, not another form to fill in! The form arrived this morning & to be honest it is a doddle to fill in, just a declaration that I live alone, I recieve middle or high rate for care of DLA & that no one recieves care benifit for looking after me. I litterally had the form filled in in 30 seconds! About 6 ticks, my signiature & the date!
So, if you meet all the above criteria, go for it! It might be worth £55 a week!
Since getting the form I`ve googled & searched to my hearts content & still found nothing!! My fingers are very firmly crossed now!!

Hi,

Please do remember that premiums such as the Severe Disability Premium, Disability Premium etc are not actual payments.

The award of a premium increases the amount of money the government says you need to live on (commonly referred to as the Applicable Amount).

If you are receiving any Means Tested Benefits (such as IS, Housing Benefit etc) then should your total income be less than the amount government says you need (ie your applicable Amount) then ones means tested benefits (IS,HB etc) awards are increased by award of premiums.

It maybe one is entitled to the premiums but if one has too much in savings or other income (which makes total income greater than the applicable amount)to claim any means tested benefit then nothing is paid because of the premium.

As all cases are different, it is impossible to tell from (or ask on) a forum such as this if the premiums may make a difference to an individual. Only obtaining face to face advice and going through ones benefits and finances in fine detail can assist in determining actual entitlement to any, or increased means tested benefits..

Hi DB,

Thanks for letting us know, and I hope you attain a positive outcome with regards to your receipt of the SDP.

Being in receipt of the SDP, may also "passport" you to other benefits, such as free presciptions and dental care, Housing Benefit, and Council Tax Benefit, if applicable.

As this will be dependant on your personal details etc, you may wish to gain advice, see :

Where to get advice?

Or you could try the Benefits Enquiry Line (BEL), see :

www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Directories/DG_10011165

(With reference to DB's previous thread), here :

Please forgive if I`m wrong but the Directgov website clearly states that you may qualify for the lower rate of SDP if:
1 You`re in the support group of ESA
2 You live alone
3 You recieve the middle or high rate of the care component of DLA
4 No one recieves care benifit for looking after you
There no other stipulations to recieving the premium!

Currently the lower rate of SDP is £55.30 a week. The higher rate (for couples both meeting the requirements) is £110.60.

A very good friend of mine who is in the same position as me recieves £55.30 a week as part of her benifits payment.

I`m not counting my chickens just yet, but everything looks quite hopeful! Fingers crossed.

Hi,

The Premiums are as listed on the following website, together with their qualification.

www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/Fina...AndSupport/DG_068683

I reiterate the premiums only affect ones applicable amount (the amount the government say you need to live on).

If your income is less than the applicable amount, you maybe able to claim certain means tested benefits, or if already in receipt of them, they maybe increased.

If because of savings, income etc one is not entitled to any means tested benefit (ie income/savings exceed applicable amount) then the premium does not increase any payments.
