means tested esa benefits was created by pjd
Hello there,

Can anyone tell me if when applying for the esa means tested benefit, exactly whose income is included when being assessed for eligibility?. Is is all income coming into the house regardless of who they are i.e. friends/family etc, or is it just a partner's income that's included.

Thanks.

Under normal circumstances it is the claimant and their partner, if appropriate. However, there can be circumstances where income from third parties can be assumed, for example if a relative was to make regular payments towards your household bills.

If in doubt with regard to any such payments, you should seek face to face advice, see

Thanks for replying gordon,

Does this mean that if I am living in someone else's house,(unable to live alone due to severity of ill health), and they are responsible for the bills, but I pay my share towards them, that their income will be included in any claim I make for an esa means tested benefit.

If this is yes, and I am unable to receive esa benefit because of this, then what would happen then as I would be left without any income at all.

Thanks.

No, this is a completely different situation from the one I mentioned above, however, I would still suggest you get advice, to ensure that your situation is properly explained to the DWP.
